Cavity Tree
Cavity Tree
Standing dead trees are among the most valuable habitat features in a forest. Cavities in these trees can form two ways: excavated by woodpeckers and other animals searching for insects, or opened by decay. Over time, both types are used by a long succession of tenants that include small owls, wood ducks, flying squirrels, and many other species that depend on ready-made cavities for nesting and shelter.
