Cherry Twist
Cherry Twist
Black cherry is common in New England forests but easy to overlook until it fruits. The trunks often develop a characteristic twist as they grow, and the fruit is a critical late summer food source for birds and mammals. These black cherry trees observed at the Wells Reserve in Maine were riddled with yellow-bellied sapsucker holes, drilled to access sap and the insects it attracts.
