Fresh Work

Pileated woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in North America, and their work is hard to miss. They excavate deep into dead or dying wood in search of insects, leaving behind these large, characteristically oval cavities. Fresh excavations expose the warm amber colored heartwood you can see in the holes. This pine had both old lichen colonizing the bark and fresh pileated work.
