Host

This pine is host to foliose lichen spreading across the bark and pileated woodpecker excavations exposing the heartwood beneath; two very different relationships with the same tree. Lichen colonize bark surfaces, breaking down minerals and adding organic matter. Pileated woodpeckers excavate in search of insects, creating cavities that will eventually shelter other species.
