The Nesting Snag
The Nesting Snag
Great blue herons nest in colonies called rookeries, typically in tall dead trees standing in or near water. The height and open sight lines of a snag make it ideal as predators are visible from a distance and the birds can come and go without obstruction. The nest itself is a large, flat platform of sticks, added to year after year. I've observed many rookeries over the years throughout New Hampshire and Maine.
