Three Birches

Paper birch is easy to overlook in summer when the forest is full. In winter, those white trunks become the thing you notice — pale against dark understory, smooth bark interrupted by the large, dark lenticels that mark where the tree breathes. I've encountered birch on nearly every trail I hike in New Hampshire. This piece grew out of that accumulated attention.
