Trail Cone

White pine cones are up to eight inches long and typically ripen and release from the tree in fall. The seeds at the base of each scale are an important food source for squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Finding one on top of the snow on a winter snowshoe trail is a reminder of how much activity is happening in the forest, even in the coldest months.
